Is a 10/10 Sundering Bow String worth it?
I was wondering if a 10/10 Sundering Bow String is worth the trouble (i.e., gold)?
If the string was to be put on a clean max damage Short Bow, would the extra penetration from the string be worth while? Would it stack with Penetrating Attack and Judge's Insight? Would you recommend putting this string on the bows that have inherent 10% armor penetration on them (e.g., Horn Bow, Ivory Bow, Storm Bow) ... or would it benefit more on a faster firing bow like a Half Moon or Short Bow (as mentioned above)? Thanks in advance! |

No, it isn't worth it. Zealous or Vampiric ftw.

First of all, a sundering bow string stacks with judge's insight and or penetrating attack. The string itself is quite weak though, as only 10% of the time you will deal 10% more damage. A vampiric bow will always deal 5 extra damage per hit, making it a much better choice damage-wise.

I use it with my Horn Bow, after all, each Ranger should have a variety of bows for different situtations. And there are times when I am not going to need that -HP regen or -Energy regen.
Keep your Zealous or your Vampiric on the bows with the faster rate of fire. |

Exactly, on the slower bows, sundering strings or elemental strings (esp. With winter in the last missions) can make a world of difference.
I actually prefer my sundering bow to others when in the UW with a trapper, Attaxes seem to not like it that much coupled with a few buffs on the damage. |

Sundering strings are trash. Period. No amount of anecdotal "evidence" ("X monster seems not to like it" or "I watch the damage and I can tell it helps") is going to change that. The math is clear and it says a perfect 10/10 string will contribute minimal damage boost. Do a search if you don't believe me . . . this is not a new topic, folks. Put an ebon or shocking string on your pulling bow for less than one plat and put the money you saved towards something more useful. I salvage/sell any 10/8, 10/9, or 10/10 strings I get from drops and think nothing of it other than that I hope when I start playing PvP seriously the guy who bought the string is on the other team.

Ryun is right, what a 10/10 will do is raise your average damage over time by a very small amount (in 100 hits, 10 will do a bit more damage, take the total extra damage done by these 10 hits and divide by 100 for the average damage per hit increase). It's not a -bad- string, just one of the weaker ones IMO. What's interesting is that so many people seem to think it's the strongest string, I see people trying to sell these for 60k and such. *boggle*

personally... i think it's still the best string to have on a longbow or w/e... a bow that u use only to start off battles... of course i'm not gonna have one on my short or halfmoon... but wats so bad about putting it on a longbow? u won't have the degen and just maybe that 1-3 shots u do to start off the battle will be a 10% penetrating hit

Sundering is shit. 100% chance of 10% armor penetration would still be worse than Vampiric. Why would you even think about using a 10% string? Sure, you want a bow without any -pips to hold onto when outside of combat, but at least an elemental bow is conditionally useful against enemies with high physical defense - Sundering is going to be trash in every conceivable combat situation. So are Sundering Bow Strings worth it? Yes, they're worth selling for a ton of gold that can promptly be invested in actually good strings.
Peace, -CxE
